If it was not for Kisköre, Lake Tisza would not exist either. The second largest lake in Hungary was “born” only because the Kisköre Dam was constructed here in the 1970s. Consequently, Kisköre is indeed the cradle of Lake Tisza. The enormous body of water, now characterised by incredibly colourful wildlife, was created here. First-time visitors maybe could not even tell that it is artificial. As the decades went by, the man-made water area was conquered by nature, and the reservoir became the country of white water. Lake Tisza has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999 as the showcase area of Hortobágy National Park.

Lake Tisza is about 5 times larger,
like Lake Velence
and approx. 5x smaller,
like Lake Balaton.

The area of Lake Tisza is 127 km2 and actually it is a “flow-through” artificial reservoir. The flow regime of the river and also the current season affect the water level: in winter, the specialists decrease the water level to a much lower value.

In this fascinating environment open water areas and islands alternate with each other, creating a mosaic layout. It is also characterised by numerous small channels and backwaters, and bordered by basins. As a result of this, extremely varied water habitats were developed, mesmerising nature-lover visitors.

If it was not for Kisköre,

Lake Tisza would not exist either.

The enthusiasts of the lake may enjoy countless leisure activities at Lake Tisza. Hikers, fans of bike tours, beach-goers or fishers may all enjoy everything this region has to offer and the hospitality of the locals.
