The fish ladder is the largest ecological fish corridor in Central Europe, connecting Lake Tisza and River Tisza of an even 10-metre lower water level. This huge difference in level and the closed locks of the dam prevent the fish from moving freely and naturally between the lake and the river. That is why the fish ladder, which actually bypasses this obstacle, was created in 2014.
1400 metres wide, 37 steps,
10 semi-natural basins , more than 40 species of fish

The fish corridor runs to River Tisza for a distance of nearly 1,400 metres, characterised by rapids and small waterfalls. The 37 steps and the related slotted fish passageway as well as the establishment of a row of 10 semi-natural basins ensured the two-way movement of the fish. More than 40 species of fish have been observed so far, such as the zingel, the spined loach or the balon’s ruffe. We can have a look at the fish through the peeping windows placed at the dam of the Fish Ladder.
